Our Steinway Piano
How a 1911 Steinway Became the Heartbeat of Meetinghouse Arts
“Do you have a decent piano?” asked professional pianist Lazlo Gardony. Penny Dublin smiled and answered, “We do not have an acoustic piano. We have a baby grand Steinway.”
Penny's confident reply to a visiting pianist perfectly captures the pride of Meetinghouse Arts in its treasured instrument. Generously gifted by Freeport residents Jane and Ed Bradley, this 1911 Model B Steinway, crafted during the company’s golden era, is a point of pride for the entire community. It was Jane's passion for music, fostered by her parents, that inspired the gift. Jane and Ed hoped the piano would repay the community for all it had given their family, offering an "opportunity to bring...the joy of music and the joy of a beautiful musical instrument" to Meetinghouse Arts.
What Makes a Steinway a Steinway
A Steinway piano isn’t just any piano—it’s considered one of the finest instruments in the world. Built with expert craftsmanship, Steinways have a rich, warm, and bright sound that responds beautifully to a player’s touch. This particular Steinway, made in 1911, represents the peak of craftsmanship, with innovations that give it powerful amplification and a deep, resonant tone. Musicians love Steinways because they allow for expressive playing and bring out subtle nuances in the music. It’s no surprise that performers often say playing a Steinway feels like an incredible experience, one that can make you want to keep playing forever. For Meetinghouse Arts, having this Steinway means attracting top-notch talent and giving artists the perfect instrument to share their creativity.

The Steinway's Journey to Meetinghouse Arts
The journey of this 1911 Steinway to Meetinghouse Arts started with Jane Bradley, a lifelong musician and local community member. After an extensive search for the perfect piano to fit Meetinghouse’s growing needs, Jane found this beautiful Model B at Lindeblad Piano Restoration, a respected place known for quality instruments. Jane and her husband Ed knew Meetinghouse needed a piano that could truly support the arts and bring people together. So, after spotting this piano—which once belonged to a professional pianist in Florida—they made it happen. The Steinway’s arrival wasn’t just about adding a piano; it was about giving the community a tool to inspire, connect, and celebrate music for years to come.
Use by Performers
This Steinway has quickly become a favorite among performers at Meetinghouse. Pianist Lazlo Gardony shared how the moment he learned about the piano, he knew it would make his performance special. The instrument’s warm, bright sound and responsiveness helps artists bring out their best, and enhance rather than reduce their talents. Paul Sullivan, another talented performer, has also enjoyed playing on it, appreciating how it supports both delicate and powerful pieces. Looking ahead, artists like Iona Fyfe are set to perform on this very piano, bringing fresh energy and new audiences. For performers, having access to such a prestigious instrument is a huge gift—it elevates their music and creates unforgettable experiences for everyone in the room.
