SUMMARY:Luminous Landscape: Color and Composition By Philip Frey
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be held in the Gallery\, not on the Stage. \nThis is your opportunity for an in-depth exploration of composition and \ncolor usage in landscape painting. Philip will present the fundamentals of \ncomposition\, color theory\, as well as best photo and sketching practices. Students will \nbe working from their own landscape reference material. Each day will include a short \ndemo\, a lecture on color or composition\, a lesson\, and a critique of student’s work. \nPhilip will be demonstrate in oil color. Pre-class instructions and materials list will be \nsupplied at registration. \nArtist statement: My teaching goal is to help you improve your work\, and develop \nyour own approach to painting\, while focusing on the fundamentals of drawing and \npainting. My classes emphasize composition and color and the history and language \nof art\, rather than painting in a particular style. The aim is to have you come away from \nmy classes and workshops excited about painting and your work! \nMedium: oil\, watercolor\, gouache\, or acrylic \nLevel: All levels (but students should be familiar with their medium) \nFee: $400 per student \nStudents: Minimum 8\, Maximum 12 \nTo register\, click here. \n  \n  \nAbout the Instructor: In the past twenty years\, Philip Frey has developed into one of \nMaine’s finest landscape painters. Known as a brilliant colorist\, Frey paints Maine’s \nharbors and islands with a bold palette that captures the light and moods of his home \nstate\, from the streets of Ellsworth and Portland to Monhegan and Acadia National \nPark. \nFrey is a nationally exhibiting artist best known for his bold paintings of Maine and \nbeyond whose primary focus is color and light\, and the inherent forms found in \nnature\, interiors\, and figures. He paints from direct perception\, preferring the dynamic \nquality\, richness\, and challenges of working from life.In 2016\, the Zillman Art Museum \nmounted a solo exhibition of Frey’s work. His work has been highlighted in several books\, \nincluding Art of Acadia\, 2016\, and Paintings of Portland\, 2018\, both by brothers Carl Little \nand David Little\, and in numerouspublications\, including: Art New England\, Gettysburg \nReview\, Maine Policy Review\, \nand Maine Sunday Telegram. In 2018 Marshall Wilkes published Philip Frey: Here and \nNow\, a beautiful monograph on Frey’s career by art historians and critics Carl Little \nand Daniel Kany. Frey’s work is held in private and corporate collections both \nnationally and internationally\, including those of writer Harlan Coben\, The Jackson \nLaboratory\, Dick Wolf Films\, Representative Chellie Pingree\, Donald Sussman\, and the \nZillman Art Museum. \nStudent Testimonials: \n“Everyone has a different approach to a painting project — its composition\, shapes and \nforms\, the colors\, and\, of course\, the process of applying paint. I think of it as a puzzle \nto solve\, and Frey taught me how to break down the process into solvable pieces. The \ndiscussion after painting was invaluable. I’ve been in reviews where an instructor \nwould say\, ‘Did you think about this…\,’ or ‘Perhaps a little more color here…’ However\, \nFrey’s approach using Procreate to ‘adjust’ the composition\, color\, or depth of the \nimage is amazing and powerful. Great tool\, and a great way to learn more about the \nprocess of thinking about painting composition and technique.” \n— Bruce H.\, Melrose\, MA \n“I have taken many YouTube workshops\, two workshops abroad\, and several online\, \nand Frey is my favorite teacher — so clear\, so many helpful techniques to apply\, and so \nkind and insightful in his critique. This sets the stage always for a wonderful \nexperience for everyone.” \n— Patricia R.\, NH \nTo see Frey’s work visit: www.philipfrey.com
