SUMMARY:Sidle House Gallery Presents: ‘Anne Hebebrand: A World That Is’
DESCRIPTION:Sidle House hours: Thursdays – Saturdays 3-6 pm and by appointment (May 1 – June 13).\nLocation: Sidle House Gallery\, 20 Bartol Island Rd. Freeport\, Maine \n  \nSidle House Gallery opens the 2026 season with a solo show by Anne Hebebrand\, on view May 1 through June 13. \n  \nThe exhibition presents work selected from Anne Heberand’s cold-wax and oil paintings over the past seven years. She describes her prolific practice as\, “rooted in an intuitive process driven by a lifelong love of abstraction. These paintings serve as maps of memory\, where colors and shapes evolve organically to create their own universe. Using oil and cold wax\, I build\, scrape\, and rework the surface— layering and excavating until the moment arrives when the piece reveals its own history and depth.” \n  \nIn his essay “Anne Hebebrand’s Serious Whimsy\,” (the introduction for her new exhibition catalog)\, Dr. Aaron Rosen writes\, “her paintings… manage to be at turns whimsical\, curious\, and enchanting. And\, at the same time\, incontrovertibly serious. Hebebrand’s works disclose—and for at least a moment\, encourage us to dwell within—the delight of the world. Far from being escapist\, they nudge us back into the world\, reminding us to seek out moments of wonder and delight\, even in unlikely places and moments.” \n  \nAnne Hebebrand is a painter whose work explores memory\, perception\, and abstraction through a nuanced play of light\, form\, and color. Her practice draws on both intuition and formal investigation\, balancing chance with intention to create layered surfaces that invite close looking. She has exhibited widely in the United States and Mexico\, and her work has been featured in Art New England\, Hartford Courant\, Zest Maine\, Journal del Pacifico\, and the New York Times. Hebebrand has decades of teaching experience at institutions including Manchester Community College\, Albertus Magnus College\, and the Wadsworth Atheneum\, and in private workshops. She holds a BFA from Boston Museum School/Tufts University and an MA from the University of Alabama. \n  \nRelated gallery events include:\nOpening Reception May 1 6-8pm.\nFeatured Artist Talk May 3 2pm.\nCold Wax & Oil Workshop with the Artist\, May 30-31.\nKatherine Liccardo performs Solo Violin with Electronics\, June 7. \n  \nSidle House hours: Thursdays – Saturdays 3-6 pm and by appointment (May 1 – June 13). \n  \nContact:\nMaddy Vertenten\, Sidle House Gallery\nEmail: maddy@sidlehouse.com\nPhone: 512.771.1149 \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:Sidle House Gallery: Cold Wax & Oil Workshop with Anne Hebebrand
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time: May 30–31 | 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM\nLocation: Sidle House Gallery\, 20 Bartol Island Rd. Freeport\, Maine\nCost: $400 per person | Limited to 6 participants \n  \nThis two-day\, studio-intensive workshop offers a rare opportunity to work closely within the setting of Anne Hebebrand’s current exhibition at the Sidle House. Designed as a focused and immersive experience\, the workshop invites participants to explore the depth and versatility of cold wax and oil painting through a balance of demonstration\, experimentation\, and individualized guidance. \nWorking in an intimate group of six\, each participant will receive sustained one-on-one feedback while developing their own paintings. Emphasis will be placed on building layered surfaces\, creating tension through contrast\, and navigating the interplay between structure and intuition—core elements of my own practice. \nThroughout the workshop\, we will move between making and looking. Time will be spent engaging directly with the exhibited work\, offering insight into process\, material decisions\, and the evolution of finished paintings. This proximity creates a dynamic dialogue between the work on the walls and the work in progress. \nThe small group size allows for a thoughtful\, responsive environment suited to painters at various stages\, particularly those interested in deepening their relationship to abstraction and material. \n  \nSidle House hours: Thursdays – Saturdays 3-6 pm and by appointment (May 1 – June 13). \n  \nContact:\nMaddy Vertenten\, Sidle House Gallery\nEmail: maddy@sidlehouse.com\nPhone: 512.771.1149 \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:Painting Flowers from Life: Oil Painting Workshop with Kat Gifford
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the colors of Spring with this one-day alla prima workshop. \nLearn to paint directly from life using fresh\, vibrant bouquets!\nWhen: Sunday\, May 31st from 2:00-5:00 PM\nWhere: Lower Level of Meetinghouse Arts\, 40 Main St\, Freeport\nCost: $95\nNew and experienced painters welcome! This one-day workshop explores painting flowers in oil alla prima (in one sitting) from direct observation. Students will work from a live floral arrangement\, beginning with observational sketches that emphasize gesture\, before moving into a structured painting process focused on block-ins\, simplified shapes and color\, and an understanding of value and light. Instructor demonstrations will guide each stage of the process\, from establishing the composition to developing a resolved study. By the end of the workshop\, participants will complete a floral painting while gaining practical tools for translating observation into expressive\, painterly work. \n \nStudents are asked to bring their own supplies based on the materials list provided by the instructor. \n \n \nAbout the Instructor: Katharina Gifford\nKatharina Gifford is a Maine-raised artist and illustrator working in traditional painting and digital media. Her practice spans figurative and still life work\, plein air painting\, and animation\, with a focus on expressive realism and painting from life as much as possible. Rooted in the process of painting\, she is interested in how mark-making\, light\, shadow\, and color create a sense of movement and atmosphere.  \n \nGifford studied at the Florence Academy of Art\, trained under painter Ronald Frontin\, and holds a BA in Art History from the University of Southern Maine. She has taught drawing and painting at institutions including the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Art Loft in Rockland\, Maine\, and her work has been exhibited throughout the state. SUMMARY:Callie Brennan & Laura Kargul in Concert
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Saturday\, June 6\, 2026 @ 7:00 PM (Doors @ 6:30 PM)\nWHERE: Meetinghouse Arts\, 40 Main St.\, Freeport\, ME 04032\nA Poetic Violin & Piano Performance\n$25 in Advance | $30 at the Door | $15 Students\nFinancial barriers shouldn’t prevent anyone from experiencing the arts. Please know that our Arts Access Fund is available to help ensure everyone can attend.\n \nCallie Brennan and Laura Kargul in Concert\nViolinist Callie Brennan and pianist Laura Kargul made their duo debut in 2025 by carrying on the tradition of the annual Valentine’s Day Concert\, a popular Maine event introduced and established over a decade ago by the Lantz-Kargul Duo. Callie\, a former student of Ronald Lantz\, also recently filled the Portland String Quartet position vacated by his retirement in 2022. Their Meetinghouse program will feature Brahms’ Sonata No. 1 in G Major\, a work infused with tender romance\, written to comfort his beloved Clara Schumann as she was caring for her youngest son Felix on his deathbed. Also on the program: Debussy’s “Clair de lune” and songs by Liszt and Fauré. The duo’s versatility will be highlighted by the “Graceful Ghost Rag” by William Bolcom\, a Piazzolla tango\, and a George Shearing jazz arrangement of “Over the Rainbow.” Callie and Laura are known for combining their poetic\, heartfelt and bold performances with humorous and insightful remarks along the way. A unique and exciting evening to remember! \nCallie Brennan\nA Maine native\, violinist Callie Brennan spent her childhood writing short stories\, practicing fiddle tunes\, and tracking mud all through the house. A student of former Portland String Quartet violinist and founder Ronald Lantz\, she developed a passion for chamber music at a young age. Callie earned a Bachelor’s degree in violin performance from the University of Colorado\, where she studied with celebrated violinists Lina Bahn and Harumi Rhodes. In 2016 she moved to London\, UK\, where she completed two Master’s degrees in music and violin performance at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama.Having recently moved back to Maine\, Callie now holds a position with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and has fulfilled her long-time dream of joining the Portland String Quartet. When not practicing or dashing off to rehearsal\, she spends her time trail running\, beach walking\, and eating alarming amounts of chocolate. \n \nLaura Kargul\nLaura Kargul has concertized as a soloist and chamber musician for over 40 years\, having performed to critical acclaim in venues across Europe and the United States. Her 1985 debut in Europe was an immediate triumph\, hailed by the Rotterdams Nieuwsblad as “one of the most remarkable debut recitals recently given in our country.” The following year she played at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and earned immediate recognition as “a world class pianist: This is playing that belongs on our great concert stages…. almost feverishly inspired\, so controlled and so thrilling.” (Haagsche Courant\, The Hague) Subsequent solo tours included concerts in Austria\, Belgium\, France\, Germany\, Greece\, Serbia\, Switzerland and the West Indies. As a guest of numerous international music festivals\, Kargul has appeared as a soloist at the Schleswig-Holstein\, Nordhessen\, and Eisenacher Summer Music Festivals in Germany and the Lesvos Arts Festival in Greece. She has recorded for radio in France\, Germany and the Netherlands\, as well as for PBS radio and national television in the United States.

SUMMARY:Sidle House Gallery: Katherine Liccardo - Solo Violin with Electronics
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time: Sunday\, June 7 | 2:30 PM\nLocation: Sidle House Gallery\, 20 Bartol Island Rd. Freeport\, Maine\nCost: Suggested donation at the door. \n  \nJoin violinist Katherine Liccardo for an afternoon of eclectic music for solo violin and electronics at Sidle House! \n  \nKatherine Liccardo returns to “Big Beauty” for an afternoon of solo violin and electronic music. The concert in the barn is set within the 2026 season opening exhibition\, Anne Hebebrand: A World That Is. The exhibition presents work selected from Anne Heberand’s cold-wax and oil paintings over the past seven years. She describes her prolific practice as\, “rooted in an intuitive process driven by a lifelong love of abstraction. These paintings serve as maps of memory\, where colors and shapes evolve organically to create their own universe. Using oil and cold wax\, I build\, scrape\, and rework the surface— layering and excavating until the moment arrives when the piece reveals its own history and depth.” \n  \nAnne Hebebrand creates luminous paintings rich with color and texture revealing delicate transitions and passages. An ongoing exploration of cold wax and oil techniques lead to a tactile surface created not only by adding layers\, but also by excavating and unearthing earlier layers of paint. \n  \nHebebrand’s paintings are not just variations on a theme\, but more like a conversation with one painting giving dialogue to another. Through experimentation and improvisation\, her process is supported by both a keen understanding of her materials and a deep knowledge of artists who have preceded her. \n  \n“My work is rooted in an intuitive process driven by a lifelong love of abstraction.
